Artist: Mamoru Nakagawa (Japan, b. 1947)
Born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Mamoru Nakagawa graduated from Kanazawa College of Art in 1971 and studied under metal artist Takahashi Kaishu from 1974. He has since dedicated himself to preserving and advancing the intricate art of Kaga zogan (flat metal inlay).
First selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1979, Nakagawa is acclaimed in Japan and abroad for landscape-themed works of exceptional design and craftsmanship. In 2004 he was designated a Living National Treasure for his mastery of chokin (metal engraving and inlay). He serves as an executive director of the Japan Kōgeikai (Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries) and as a professor at Kanazawa College of Art.
This flower vessel, with its misty silver inlay and tranquil forest motif, exemplifies Nakagawa’s refined artistry and the subtle elegance of Kaga metalwork.
