Embroidery “Ladies after Zhang Daqian”

Born in Mudu, Wuxian, Jiangsu Province, Gu Wenxia is an Asia–Pacific Handcraft Master and Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts, celebrated for her mastery of Suzhou embroidery (Su Xiu). She joined the Suzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles embroidery group in 1954 and later served as Deputy Director and Director of the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute, as well as Chief Designer.

Gu founded the China Suzhou Embroidery Art Museum in 1986 and the Gu Wenxia Su Embroidery Studio in 2001. A recipient of the State Council’s Special Government Allowance, she has been honored as a National Model Worker, a Lifetime Achievement Award winner for Chinese Arts and Crafts, and a designated Representative Inheritor of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (Su Embroidery).
