Daughter of renowned painter Fu Baoshi, Fu YiYao graduated from Nanjing Normal University in 1970 and joined the Jiangsu Chinese Painting Institute in 1978. In 1979 she was personally approved by Deng Xiaoping to study in Japan, earning a master’s degree in Japanese painting from Musashino Art University and later training under celebrated painter Hirayama Ikuo at the University of Tokyo.

Fu’s large-scale ink paintings are known for their sweeping power, refined detail, and vivid color. She has held more than fifty exhibitions worldwide—including at the United Nations Headquarters, the National Art Museum of China, and major venues in the United States, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan—and has published numerous books. Her works are in the collections of the British Museum, the United Nations, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japanese Imperial Household, and many other prominent museums and cultural institutions.
