Ink Pine Fan Painting "Green Pines"

Dimensions: 52.5 × 23.3 cm
Artist: Yu Shaosong (China, 1882–1949)
Inscription: Presented to Liang Sicheng

Also known by the studio names Yueyuan and Hanke, Yu Shaosong came from a distinguished Longyou, Zhejiang family with seven generations of expertise in painting and calligraphy. Immersed in this tradition and inspired by travels through China's celebrated landscapes, he developed a literati style noted for elegant restraint and spirited brushwork.

Renowned for his ink bamboo and pine paintings—praised as "graceful yet never chaotic"—Yu was also accomplished in cursive zhangcao calligraphy. In 1931, one of his bamboo works exhibited in Japan was purchased by the mother of Emperor Hirohito, who conveyed her congratulations to the Chinese government.

This fan painting of resilient green pines, gifted to the eminent architect Liang Sicheng, exemplifies Yu's refined brush technique and the symbolic endurance of the pine in Chinese art.
