Artist: Yu Shaosong (China, 1882–1949)
Inscription: "For my esteemed brother Sicheng on his marriage…"
Also known by the studio names Yueyuan and Hanke, Yu Shaosong came from a distinguished Longyou, Zhejiang family with seven generations of painting and calligraphy tradition. Immersed in this heritage and inspired by travels through China's great landscapes, he developed a literati style noted for elegant, unrestrained brushwork.
Renowned for his ink bamboo and rock motifs and fluid zhangcao calligraphy, Yu rarely accepted commissions, making his works highly prized. In 1931 one of his bamboo paintings shown in Japan was purchased by the mother of Emperor Hirohito, who sent formal congratulations to the Chinese government.
This album—presented to the architect Liang Sicheng as a wedding gift—combines paintings of rock, bamboo, and poetic inscriptions, embodying Yu's refined artistry and the traditional Chinese wish for harmony and enduring strength.
