Kyoto-born artist Hiroaki Taniguchi studied for ten years under renowned textile and pattern designer Ishimasa Masao beginning in 1956. Early in his career he received the Kyoto Mayor’s and Governor’s Prizes at the Kyoto Industrial Design Exhibition (1960) and established his own studio in 1966.
Taniguchi’s work bridges traditional Japanese textile art and contemporary design. He has held solo exhibitions in India (1976, The Sarasa Road), Europe (1985), and Japan, earning numerous honors including the Minister of Education Award (1978) and recognition from multiple textile and pattern associations. He created ceiling paintings for Jōnen-ji Temple (2002, 2007) and designed trophies for the Athens Classical Marathon (2010–2011).
A member of the Japan Pattern Association and the Kōgenkai (Japanese painting society), Taniguchi continues to lead the Manyō Art Class, sharing his mastery of dyeing, painting, and decorative arts.
