Born in Mie Prefecture, Yamaoka Yoshinobu graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Training Institute in 1959. A celebrated Kyoto ware (Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki) artist, he has received numerous honors, including the Kyoto Prefectural Governor’s Prize (2000, 2008), the Kyoto Mayor’s Prize (2002), the Kinki Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Director’s Prize (2003), and the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce President’s Prize (2005). Recognized as a Traditional Craftsman in 2001, Yamaoka was also commended by the Kinki Bureau in 2006 for his contributions to the traditional crafts industry.
This elegant lidded teacup, inspired by The Tale of Genji’s fifty-four chapters, exemplifies the refined painting and glazing techniques of Kyoto’s renowned ceramic tradition.
