Kutani Ware “Five-Colored Tea Bowl”


Artist: Asakura Isokichi (Japan, 1913 – 1998)

Born in 1913 in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, Asakura Isokichi became one of the most celebrated masters of Kutani ware. His achievements include the Prime Minister’s Prize at the 9th Nitten Exhibition (1977), the Japan Art Academy Award (1980), election to the Japan Art Academy (1984), recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit (1992), and the Order of Culture (1996).

Renowned for his bold use of traditional Kutani overglaze enamels in rich, vibrant colors, Asakura’s “Five-Colored Tea Bowl” exemplifies the dynamic yet refined aesthetic that earned him national acclaim.
