The 9th International Children's Art & Science Exhibition
From September 22nd to November 1st, 2026, The Fragrance Atlas - The 9th International Children's Art & Science Exhibition will be held at the Shanghai Art Collection Museum.
The exhibitioin will explore the underappreciated sense of smell and its scientific connections to nature, daily life, health and technology. Through artworks, young audiences trace the origin and evolution of scents from a genealogical perspective, discovering how odours are perceived, recorded, simulated and designed. The exhibition showcases youthful creativity and opens an approachable gateway for the public to olfactory science.

4 Thematic Sections
Explore the Full Genealogy of Fragrances
Centered on Fragrance Genealogy, the exhibition arranges four themed zones to reveal the scientific logic and artistic expression behind scent, this invisible sensory phenomenon.
1. Breath of the Wilderness:
The Natural Language of Smell
Scent is nature’s ancient, hidden language. This section explores natural aromas from forests, meadows and oceans. Young creators use painting, mixed media and installations to portray scents of rain-wet soil and blooming flowers. Visitors uncover the science of plant volatiles, microbes and pheromones, discovering how scent shapes natural landscapes and maintains ecological balance.
2. Aroma Creation:
The Birth of Artificial Smell
Extracted, analyzed and reconstructed, scent enters the realm of human creation. This section explores the origin and application of man-made aromas, including spice extraction, scent blending, flavour development and fragrance engineering. Young artists interpret invisible scents through colour and form. Visitors learn artificial aromas are not mere imitations of nature, but scientific creations rooted in chemistry and experiments, blending technological rationality with aesthetic perception.
3. Invisible Field:
The Spatial Order of Smell
More than an olfactory sensation, scent acts as an invisible informational language of space. This section explores how odours disperse. Art installations and scientific visualization visualize molecular diffusion and concentration, allowing visitors to “see” scent. Visitors learn how airflow and spatial structure shape perception, and how scent subtly helps us identify surroundings, judge directions and assess safety as an essential part of spatial experience.
4. The Future of Smell:
Imagining Scents to Come
This section invites young visitors to imagine the future of olfactory technology. Works featuring virtual scent simulation, odour coding, urban air design and immersive sensory systems depict a customizable olfactory world. Young creators use digital art and multimedia installations to show how technology expands human sensory limits. Visitors will realise scent is more than passive perception, but a key element of future technology, provoking thoughts on future lifestyles, tech ethics and sensory civilisation.
Participants
All the teenagers under 18 around the world who are committed to advocating world peace and are willing to facilitate the art and cultural exchange among the countries.
Requirements on the Work
All forms of work related to the theme, are accepted, including artefacts, models, 3D Printing, sculpture, specimen, digital, mosaic, device, creative painting, photography, AI, etc. Large scale artistic and science device made by a team are encouraged.
Requirements on Mounting
All works submitted are supposed to be mounted by authors， graphic works should be framed, mixed-media and other forms of work could be mounted based on the style.

Selection and Delivery
If the works pass the first round of selection, the Organizing Committee will officially inform the artists to deliver their exhibits. Works should be delievered to the museum by 17:00, September 15th, 2026.

Note
The selected works will NOT be returned after the exhibition and will be used for public welfare and printed catalog. If artists request for returning artworks, the related costs will be covered by themselves.
